One of the largest medieval fortifications in Europe. The fortress was built in the 15th century by order of Despot Đurađ Branković as the new capital of the Serbian Despotate. The fortress served a defensive purpose and withstood many sieges, especially during the Ottoman Empire.

The fortress complex consists of an inner and outer city, surrounded by massive walls and towers. This historical monument is of great importance to Serbian culture and history and is a popular tourist destination today.
